How This Favorite Psalm Reveals the Patterns of Your Life

You probably know it by heart. Many a soldier huddled in a fox hole has spoken its words of solace while in the thick of battle.

Many a sick loved one has clung to its life-giving words on the comforting lips of a visitor.

I took a fresh look at Psalm 23 recently and found myself paying particular attention to the verbs in it. The Shepherd of whom this poetic song speaks is anything but passive.

Watch what he does for the “sheep” (you and me). He:

  • Makes me lie down in green pastures
  • Leads me beside still waters
  • Refreshes my soul

Then he:

  • Guides me along the right paths
  • Is with me in the darkest valley
  • Comforts me with his rod and staff

Not only that, he:

  • Prepares a table before me
  • Anoints my head with oil
  • His goodness and love follow me all my days

This is an intentional Shepherd.

He knows exactly what he is doing as he takes care of us in three areas.

First, the Shepherd ensures that we receive rest, nourishment and refreshment. It’s interesting that the psalm doesn’t begin with either victory or hardship. It starts with resting in all of God’s provision.

I often need to be reminded that God requires Sabbath rest for a reason.

Sabbath rest is a mindset and a lifestyle, not a rule about Sundays.

After he fills us with all we need, we go on a journey with the Shepherd as our guide.

His presence is very near, no matter the circumstances we find ourselves in. Even in the darkest place, he provides comfort as well as course corrections (symbolized by his rod and staff).

Finally, we come through the trial into a place of triumph. A feast is prepared, right in front of our enemies. Our heads are anointed with oil (a symbol of honor, authority and blessing).

This is a victory celebration! It’s is a time to revel in all that God has done, and to receive the honor he bestows on those who honor him.

Rest and nourishment; trial and hardship; breakthrough and vindication. I can look back and see these cycles repeating — sometimes overlapping — in my life.

No doubt you’ve seen God’s faithfulness in these areas of your own life, too.

There are a few more verbs in the psalm, this time about us:

  • I lack nothing.
  • I will fear no evil.
  • My cup overflows.
  • I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

That’s a pretty sweet deal, right there. Lacking nothing. Fearing no evil. Overflowing blessing. Living in God’s presence … forever.

The Shepherd’s goodness prompts us to respond with hearts full of trust and mouths full of praise.

In John 10, Jesus says:

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep… he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.”

Jesus is the Good Shepherd, and you are his lamb.

Are you weary? He offers rest. Are you going through a hard time? He is your comfort.

Are you wondering when breakthrough is coming? He’ll bring about your triumph in his perfect time.

Peter says this:

“And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.” — 1 Peter 5:4

Jesus honors those who honor him.

Life has its patterns and cycles, and the Good Shepherd is well aware of every season.

Thanks to him, your trials won’t last forever — but your reward will.
