How Are You Hiding From God? — Part 2

July 27, 2013 by Susanne Maynes Leave a Comment

We were talking about how God knows your ways intricately, and that is nothing to fear.

Let’s look at the other side of this coin, though.  It is possible to exasperate and even anger God. Know how? By refusing to know his ways.

Talking about the ancient Israelites, the writer of Hebrews quotes additional Scriptures about how they rebelled against God and tested him to the point of provoking him. They had seen all the ways he had taken care of them. He led them, fed them, and saved them from their enemies, yet they continually questioned and grumbled against him.

In his frustration, God says, “They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.” (Heb. 3:9)

Back to the “ways” again. So how do we know someone’s ways?  Easy for God, you may think.  He knows everything. I mean, He’s God.  How am I supposed to know his ways?

When I fell in love with my husband, I came to know lots of little unique facets that make Scott who he is. This happened naturally as I spent time with him and came to know his likes, dislikes, habits, thoughts, and values.

I think I can say after almost thirty years of marriage that I know Scott’s ways. I can tell you how he feels about things, what makes him happy or upset, what drains him or cheers him. I know him because I love him, and I love him because I know him.

That’s what God wants from me, too. He doesn’t care so much about what Bible verses I can recount or how many hours of church volunteering I’ve logged in this week. He wants me to know his ways.

He wants me to be able to explain to someone else what makes him joyful or furious, what moves his heart, what he is passionate about.

What can you tell others about the ways of God?
