Ever have that moment when you realize you’re so out of juice that you can’t seem to work up any inspiration or energy, even for the things you love?

These days, I find myself rubbing my head and staring at a blank Word document, then at the hand-written list of potential blog post topics which I keep on hand.
Aaaaand … nada.
None of it compels me forward. Nothing inspires me enough to put words to paper (except these few words to let you know what’s going on).
I’ve blogged for six years now. Besides maintaining my own blog, where I write about church and culture, spiritual growth and Christian parenting, I’ve guest posted on other sites such as CBE International, Kurt Bubna, and John Rosemond’s Parent Guru.
I’m also on the blogging team for Heartbeat International at pregnancyhelpnews.com. I presented a webinar for Heartbeat this month, and was also interviewed by Axis.org for their parenting summit in February.
In the last couple of years, I’ve authored two books and captured my parenting workshop on video (you can now watch it online!).
All this means that, despite my dug-in heels, I’ve been dragged into the world of book and course marketing and promotion, which is by far my least favorite part of doing this work.
I’ve also held down a day job for most of this time, and my tribe has increased to a current total of six grandchildren to love. Plus I hope to begin online seminary this fall to earn a Master in Theological Studies.
There’s no shortage of things to do or relationships in which to invest myself.
In light of everything, I’m feeling the need to breathe for a spell—to get re-calibrated and make sure I’m heading where God is leading me.
So, for my sake and yours, I’m taking a writing break for now.
I need to do things like listen to the melody of the little goldfinches. Notice a bumblebee land on a petunia. Enjoy my grandkids chasing soap bubbles.
Simple things to restore my weary soul.
While I’m not taking a writing break in order to become a more effective, focused writer, I do believe that will be a by-product of this mini-sabbatical.
Here’s where the benefit to you personally comes in:
I’m committed to producing quality content which actually makes a difference in people’s lives. I want to fuel your passion for God and help you think critically about matters of faith.
By stepping away for a while, I hope to refine the words I offer you.
(If you’re a new subscriber, I’m sorry for the timing of this break. Please feel free to browse the archives on my site. There’s plenty to peruse in the interim, so enjoy.)
For all my readers, a big thank-you! Given the noisy world we live in, I consider it a privilege that you read my words. Thanks for letting me serve you in this way.
I would greatly appreciate your prayers as I set aside creative endeavors to rest for a few weeks. Feel free to shoot me a quick note, too. I’d love to hear from you.
And if you can relate to feeling burned out, may the Lord refresh you and replenish your zest for life.

I know how you feel and I am not nearly as busy as you! But I find it extremely difficult to write and post anything if I don’t feel inspired! It feels wrong just to push words out there, just so that there are words out there, if they don’t first burn in my heart! May you get the rest you need and the joy of enjoyment in every good gift God has given you.
Thank you so much, Jacqueline!
Hi Suzanne,
I’m a big believer in taking breaks like this in life and taking good self care of yourself in the process! It can be too easy to get caught up in doing many things but losing the passion and quality of what you want to be intentional about! I’m thankful for my part time job that gives me needed rest in between to rest and enjoy my family and friends. I’m learning as I get older the importance of my priorities and taking care of myself so I can give to others out of abundance not burn out is important to me. Enjoy your mini sabbatical and May the Lord use it to refresh your soul, mind and body! Love you! Linda Felts
I’m taking your advice, Linda! Thanks! 🙂
